Lenore Janecek was only fifteen when she first witnessed what medical error looked like. She accompanied her beloved mother to the hospital, and watched helplessly as her mother was forced to have a surgery that she did not agree to. Lenore knew her mother was dying, and that there was nothing she could do to change it. She was poor, female, and a minor, and didn’t have a voice others considered worth listening to.
Fast-forward thirty-five years. Lenore is now a nationally known health care expert, author, TV host, and public speaker. Diagnosed with cancer she undergoes invasive surgery, only to uncover that there was a disastrous mix-up, and her surgery was unnecessary. In this stirring memoir, Lenore details her ensuing story of uncovering the hospital’s attempt to hide their error, and the lawsuit she undertook in order to find the facts.
But Lenore’s story is much more than the legal battle, it is an intimate spiritual journey, a memoir about survival, overcoming obstacles, and fighting for oneself. Woven throughout the book are the real-time conversations that she has with her psychiatrist as she rallies to overcome the PTSD brought on by the surgery and cover-up, as well as a full account of the trial.
Along the way she shares the heartbreaking stories of others who have lost their loved ones and are also seeking to find the truth, such as the pregnant mother and nurse, whom she meets at a WHO Patient Safety Conference, who is searching to find out the real cause of her young daughter’s death. With the help of a “detective pediatrician” she finally discovers that it was caused by medical mismanagement.
The book provides also offers guidance on how to alleviate medical errors from happening by educating readers on how to ensure their safety. If it could happen to her, it could happen to anyone. Making a strong case for accountability and patient safety advocacy, this book is a call to action.
